OCT Eye Test

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Eye Test

An OCT eye test is performed by your eye doctor to take a picture of the back of your eye, called your retina. The OCT scan is a critical test for determining the health of your retina.

The OCT eye test can be used to diagnose and manage various eye diseases like diabetes-related retinopathy, glaucoma, and other eye diseases.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) test is performed by your eye doctor ( Ophthalmologist ) using a sophisticated ophthalmic instrument called an OCT machine. The OCT test procedure does not make any eye contact with the patient or cause any discomfort to the patient.

OCT testing has become a standard of eye care for the assessment and treatment of most retinal conditions. A modern OCT machine measures retinal thickness and takes cross-section 3D high-resolution pictures of your retina using light rays.

The OCT eye test is a simple retinal imaging test that does not use any radiation or X-rays. The OCT scan test does not hurt, and it is not uncomfortable for the patient.

The OCT scan test procedure usually takes ten to fifteen minutes. During the test procedure, the patient rests his chin on the OCT scan instrument. The patient is asked to look at the red dot visible to the patient. The OCT machine automatically scans both eyes, and a report is generated.

When Do You Need Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Eye Test ?

The OCT eye test can be used to diagnose a variety of eye problems. OCT scan examinations are most commonly used for the diagnosis and treatment of  glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Your ophthalmologist can clearly see each of the retina’s different layers using OCT scan findings. The findings of the OCT test allow your ophthalmologist to map and measure the thickness of the retinal layer. These parameters assist in diagnosis.

What Is Glaucoma ?

OCT Eye Test For Diagnosis Of Glaucoma

The Glaucoma is an eye disease caused due to increased eye pressure. The increased eye pressure can damage your optic nerve adversely affecting the normal vision.

The optic nerve plays an important role and it sends visual information to your brain from your eyes. In most cases the glaucoma is the result of abnormally high pressure ( IOP )  inside your eye. The sustained high pressure in the eyes can damage the optic nerve tissue.

Diabetic Retinopathy

OCT Eye Test For Diagnosis Of Diabetic Retinopathy

OCT scanning is crucial diagnostic eye test for patients affected by diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused due to damage caused by diabetes to the blood vessels of your retina.

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that can cause vision loss and blindness in people who have diabetes. Diabetes affects blood vessels in the retina, which is a light-sensitive layer of tissue in the rear portion of your eye.

If you have diabetes, it’s important to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam and a comprehensive eye check-up by your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) at least once a year.

Diabetic retinopathy may not be noticeable in the initial stage of the disease. However, as the disease progresses, vision is affected. The OCT test allows your eye doctor to closely examine the condition of your retina. Finding it in early stages can help you take steps to protect your vision.

When your eye drainage works fine the normal eye pressure is maintained. Normal eye pressure ranges from 10-21 mm Hg. The Ocular hypertension is an eye pressure that is greater than 21 mm Hg.

When your eye drainage does not work properly the fluid pressure builds up in the eye. The normal eye pressure ranges from 10-21 mm Hg. The ocular hypertension is an eye pressure that is greater than 21 mm Hg.

A moderate high eye pressure does not cause any noticeable symptoms or pain, or any other discomfort to the patient. However, a very high pressure  can cause pain in and around the eye and nausea or vomiting.

Your eye doctor can easily diagnose the increased eye pressure by performing the NCT eye pressure test during the routine eye check up. And therefore, the regular eye check up by your eye doctor ( ophthalmologist ) is very important.

Most people fail to notice the early symptoms of increased eye pressure known as ocular hypertension. Your eye doctor can easily notice these changes during the eye examination with simple NCT test.

The increase eye pressure can damage the optic nerve and this can result into vision loss. The regular eye consultation can help you preserve your vision during your lifetime.
