The perimetry ( Visual Field Test ) is one of the most important test for the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. The glaucoma can cause increases in the eye pressure ( intraocular pressure IOP ). The increased eye pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve and the consequential loss of vision.
A visual field test or perimetry is a part of the medical eye examination that detects the loss of in the peripheral vision or central vision.
Since the loss in the peripheral vision happens gradually, most patients fail to notice the loss in the vision. However, your eye doctor during routine eye examination can diagnose the early symptoms.
The loss of the Visual field could be due to glaucoma or some neurological conditions such as stroke, trauma, brain tumors or other medical condition.
A visual field test measures two things :
- How far up, down, left and right the eye can see without moving the head.
- How sensitive the vision is in different parts of the visual field.
The perimetry eye test at Dr Swati Sathe’s Eye clinic is performed using the latest special medical equipment called perimeter.
The perimetry test usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes depending upon the program selected on the perimeter by your eye doctor. The visual field test is performed separately for the left eye and the right eye.
Your eye doctor will give you detailed instructions before the test starts. It is important for the patient to follow these instructions to ensure the accuracy of the test.
