What Is Visual Field Test ?
The perimetry ( Visual Field Test ) is one of the most important test for the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. The glaucoma can cause increases in the eye pressure ( intraocular pressure IOP ). The increased eye pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve and the consequential loss of vision.
A visual field test or perimetry is a part of the medical eye examination that detects the loss of in the peripheral vision or central vision.
Since the loss in the peripheral vision happens gradually, most patients fail to notice the loss in the vision. However, your eye doctor during routine eye examination can diagnose the early symptoms.
The loss of the Visual field could be due to glaucoma or some neurological conditions such as stroke, trauma, brain tumors or other medical condition.
A visual field test measures two things :
- How far up, down, left and right the eye can see without moving the head.
- How sensitive the vision is in different parts of the visual field.
The perimetry eye test at Dr Swati Sathe’s Eye clinic is performed using the latest special medical equipment called perimeter.
The perimetry test usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes depending upon the program selected on the perimeter by your eye doctor. The visual field test is performed separately for the left eye and the right eye.
Your eye doctor will give you detailed instructions before the test starts. It is important for the patient to follow these instructions to ensure the accuracy of the test.
What Is Glaucoma ?
The Glaucoma is an eye disease caused due to increased eye pressure. The increased eye pressure can damage your optic nerve adversely affecting the normal vision.
The optic nerve plays an important role and it sends visual information to your brain from your eyes. In most cases the glaucoma is the result of abnormally high pressure ( IOP ) inside your eye. The high pressure ( ocular hypertension ) in the eyes can damage the optic nerve tissue.
It is important for the glaucoma patients to regularly consult and monitor the intraocular pressure with Tonometry ( Eye Pressure Test ).
Visual Field Test ( Perimetry ) For Glaucoma

The darker Gray area and the black area represents loss of vision in the visual field. The optic disk appears black in both the visual field which is normal.
How Visual Field Test Is Performed ?
The visual field test is performed using a special medical instrument called a perimeter. This test is a subjective vision field test. This means that the accuracy of the test depends upon the patient’s responses.
And therefore, it is important for the patient to clearly understand the instructions to be followed during the perimetry test. The perimetry test procedure is simple and patient can quickly understand.
